Tomatoes

This spring we were thinking of planting a garden again. The last time we did, we did not yield more than a handful of each thing we planted. We have poor soil in our yard. Maybe because of the derby truck that usually sits there.......Or the in ground pool that is buried there? Anyway, with my work at St. John's I have made friends with some of the people in the garden program. If they can grow all their plants in raised containers, why couldn't we? So we went back to the way we have been doing tomatoes. In 5 gallon pails and very large pots. We planted 16 plants in 6 pots. Then there was a lonely cucumber bush, we said "let's try it", but he is not doing well. The kids have enjoyed seeing how a little hard work helps something grow. Kailey mostly was in charge. She planted, weeded, and watered, and watered, and watered!! Now the plants are as tall as our garage in some planters. They are bending over with the weight of tomatoes! Some are finally starting to turn red. Of course the boys don't like tomatoes, unless it is in ketsup. So Kailey got her first taste of her work. She choose a red cherry tomato, picked it, washed it, and bit into it. Her response "It yucky, you eat it mommy!" So Mike and I will have plates of tomatoes, until they are coming out our ears! At least we like them. :)

If you spend time and nurture it will thrive and grow!

Why did I know that Kailey would find the cherry tomatoes "yucky" You could always have Mike make BLT's or tomatoe subs for lunch everyday between now and Halloween or send some over to your favorite sister and brother-in-law!
